Cigarette Smoke
Clouds of dust and grey fill the air
As I try to see through to the man
The heart of him, those eyes of his
Bring me down to my knees
I suck it in, breathe deep, let it burn
Scorched throat to blackened lungs
To heart that skipped a beat
Fill me up to quiet my anxiety
Through the mist of artificial fog
A boy to like, a man I could love
Breathes it all into my mouth
I take it in for a brief taste of him
Auburn eyes seem green in this faded light
I want to see them more clearly
His face always clouded by smog
He is hidden beneath bad, old habits
The gleam of his teeth shine through
In a smile, for me or just for the tension
Fog lifts for a brief sip of beer
I smile back to show the signs
That I want more than just a new friend
More than an occasional cup of coffee
More to see, more to know, more to smell
than the bitter taste of your cigarette smoke
